I finally finished my first book of 2023. It took me a lot longer than expected since I’ve been fighting COVID the past couple of weeks.
Carolina Moonset is narrated by Joey Green. He has returned home to Beaufort, SC to help with his ailing father, Marshall. Marshall has recently been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and needs round the clock care. When a prominent member of the community is murdered Joey’s family finds themselves in the center of the investigation. While working to clear his father’s name Joey unearths decades of secrets and lies that will mar the idyllic coastal town.
This was an intriguing read. Goldman did a wonderful job creating the mystery that dominates the plot. There were some twist that I didn’t see coming until they were happening. I also enjoyed how Goldman paced the novel. The secrets of Joey’s family, the history of the town, and what happened the night of the murder come out piece by piece. This kept me hooked and anticipating what was coming next.
I have to say I could have done without the romance between Leela and Joey. I’ve never been a fan of “instalove” and it’s hard for me to believe that this great life changing love comes to be in a matter of days. The characters did have good chemistry and I enjoyed their interactions, but in my opinion it would be more believable if they developed a friendship.
If you enjoy family dramas or mysteries I would highly recommend this book. It would also make a great beach or summer read.
